Telstra, Microsoft Windows, Norton et al. will NOT ring you advising you have viruses, germs and malware
IT IS A SCAM !!!
  • If they ring - HANG UP!
  • NEVER let anyone on your PC unless you have met them in person - no matter how helpful they are!
  • NEVER transfer money when someone has remote access to your PC (they will take even more of your money)
  • If you got caught and the Australian Federal Police ring you to return your stolen money, DO NOT LET THEM ON YOUR PC (they will only take more of your money - it is a SCAM)
  • I am only a phone call away - hang up on them and ring me for advise!!!

The ATO will not ring you threatening court action - it is a SCAM, ignore it (or ring the ATO and prove it to yourself)

If you receive an email account from Telstra, Citilink, your Power Company, etc - do NOT click the link on the invoice (if in doubt, log in to your account using your normal browser).

If you receive an email from someone you know but it contains little else but a link, do NOT click it. It is almost certainly not from your friend!! If in doubt, email them and ask them if they sent it.

If you are browsing the web and the screen suddenly changes with a voice advising you not to turn your PC off, telling you not to close the window and that you should not attempt to shut Windows down because your system has been compromised, and is under attack and you could loose everything - IT IS A LIE!!!!
You must . . . . . . .
Immediately TURN OFF YOUR PC, if it is a desktop, turn the power off at the wall, if it is a laptop, hold your finger on the on/off button for AT LEAST 20 SECONDS.

If you think none of the above could ever happen to you, ask your friends and I am sure they will know someone just as clever as you who got caught, but some of your friends will not be aware - so talk about it. Don't let your friends or mine get caught out.

If you want examples of all of the above, based on real people living somewhere near you, check out SCAM and CRYPTOLOCKER and read my blog.

AND ONE MORE . . . (this is not really a scam, just an annoyance)
Just because Telstra delivers a shiny new modem to you, you do NOT have to connect to Telstra NBN. Of course you can if you wish, there is nothing wrong with Telstra NBN other than it is more expensive than most. But you can also choose another provider, you have plenty of time to make up your mind. Ignore the scare tactics, your ADSL and phone will continue working while YOU decide what to do. Telstra's tactics are bordering on intimidating as they attempt to retain customers now the NBN has arrived and you finally have a real choice.

YES - the internet has become a scary place
please don't get scammed, ripped off, misled or stolen from
